like my website. (pagemill)

has anyone gone the double platform route?
win 7 and xp pro/side by side.

i know it can be done...and i will just do it soon.
so. (i have googled this system, and there is a great
deal of conflicting information...(would you guess?)
if you have any experience with this system let me know
off list.

I had the same problem Mel, and upgraded my Windows 7 to professional, whic=
h got a lot of the programs working, that worked with Windows XP. I'd love =
to be able to load XP on and have a dual boot system, but have no idea how =
to do it or what the pitfills may be. So, I'll be eager to hear what kind o=
f feedback you get on this from our resident computer whiz kids. :-)

Warm regards,
June

Mel, I had a problem with one of my programs that did not like Windows7. I
found that if I ran the program in administer mode, I could use it, but onl=
y
in a very limited capacity.

This is a real problem for those upgrading to Win7. I decided to stay
with XP SP3 until way out into the future because I was hearing of just
such troubles from a computer guru friend. Turns out some of what runs
on XP won't run on Win7 Home, but will run on Win7 Pro - so says my guru
friend. Also, some programs that would run on Win7 simply have had their
day, and likely will never run on Win7. They are just over. One other
thing, many programs are upgrading and won't run on 32 bit machines.
Some program upgrades will only run on 64 bit machines. A good example
is Premiere Pro in the CS5 series from Adobe. It's been changed into a
strictly 64 bit machine program. So the CS4 Premiere Pro from Adobe is
the last one that will run on both XP and Win7.

I'm sure there are other examples of this out there. Staying up to date
can be costly.

I know that Linux and XP will cohabit - but not sure about Win7 and
Linux or Win7 and XP.

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

This as a "feature" of Windows 7 Home version, if you are using the Pro or
Ultimate versions there is an option to run in XP mode and your software
should run there. Otherwise, as I said before this is a "feature".

It's not really "dual boot" (more properly called multi-boot). That
capability has long been around for previous versions of
Windows. This is "Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC," and it can be
installed in Win 7 Pro, Enterprise, or Ultimate. When installed,
both operating systems get booted at startup and are available at the
same time (as opposed to dual boot, where one must choose at
startup). Installation requires two downloads:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

I tried it briefly a couple years ago and found that it installed
very easily. But in productive use it seemed unwieldy, hung up at
times, and since the old (1993!) program I wanted it for provided an
upgrade, I dumped it.

Sorry, that's pretty vague performance feedback, but the installation
was smooth.

Mel, have you checked your "ton" of programs for Win 7's
Compatibility feature? Right-click any program launch short-cut
icon, or any program name in your Start menu list, click Properties,
and click the Compatibility tab (there's also a Troubleshoot
Compatibility option in the right-click menu).

My non-whiz kid advice would be to move past Pagemill, Lotus 123,
Mosaic, Edlin, and the rest of your "ton" of golden oldies. As
someone on this list sez, a couple of your good pots will pay for
them! Plus, you'll have the fun of learning something new.

John,

I agree with you.

Have you heard of a free OS called Fedora, a Linux based OS? Fedora comes i=
n
two flavors 32 and 64 bits. I have tried Fedora and I like that it will
emulate Windows, so that Windows programs can be used under Fedora. The
program that comes with Fedora that emulates the Windows environment is cal=
l
Wine, which comes with Fedora. I have tested the program and like I said, I
did like Fedora; however, there are a few limitations in the version of
Fedora that I tested. It, will not play some music, movies, and a few other
files.

I think that you can do a dual boot with Fedora and XP; however, I do not
remember, since it has been a while since I tested the OS. The current
version of the OS is 15. I tested Fedora on an older 64 bit Asus
motherboard, and the funny thing about this motherboard is that I could not
install Vista on it. Win7 will install on the computer, but it is old and
the video card will not support Aero.

I have a 160 gig hard drive, that I am not using and I may just try Fedora
15 out to see, if they have made any sufficient changes to the base OS. If
you like, I can report to you what I learned and if there are any new
changes that will help you in your endeavor, and to see if the Windows
emulator works with the old 32 bit programs.

I will give you the website of Fedora; which is www.fedoraproject.org
