bluebird tap and die

I think it was Lady Mendl said the only thing better than owning a =3D
yacht having friends who owned one....

Ditto for tap and die...Unless, unless, and until.

I bought myself a set in 1980 for my 50s birthday and it cost $50. It =3D
was only one size.
Made an opening about 1.5 inches...

It was difficult to use. The booklet makes it look easy. But, if you =3D
trusted the booklets you would be reroofing the house twice a week!

It takes A LOT of practice to do this well, esp. the part where the =3D
thread is on the outside of the neck, and even if/when you make the neck =
=3D
as a separate unit, it takes a lot of practice. =3D20

Also I found the thing did not work equally well on all bodies. =3D20

Of course, at the time, the thing was new, made in the USA, and kinda =3D
limited edition. Today the thing probably would be made in China and =3D
much cheaper. What would I pay? I think $50 then was high--but how =3D
often do I turn 50?--but $50 would be okay now. It still would be an =3D
investment only for those who really will use it. I did not use mine =3D
much, never found it better than corks, do not make that many flasks. =3D
SO many "innovations" are huge successes till "everyone has one" . Or =3D
how I have gotten my woks (for making mold) from thrift shops, ditto =3D
fondue pots, and Krupp espresso machines! (I do not think--but what do =
=3D
I know?--that this would add to sales when threaded necks become =3D
commonplace. )

Having said all that, I hope the Bluebirders make some t&ds and give =3D
them to people like Eponymous Vince and Bill Schran to try on their =3D
students. The young are quick studies, and have nimble fingers...I =3D
think if it "flew" with college students, it would sell. =3D20

And as postscript: No, I cannot offer to lend mine, I do not know where =
=3D
it went...I may have given away, it may have gone off in a burglary we =3D
had...If I did have I WOULD lend.
I think though I might look for a woodworker to make me a wooden =3D
one...I like wood.
