ceramic fiber...how to stick on?

updated thu 29 jan 98

Hi folks,
I have a small kiln almost built & now I just need to add the fiber insulation
to inside of kiln & door.
So, how do I get it on there & what "glue" will work? I have seen fiber held
on with wire staples just pushed through the fiber into the bricks.....hangs
for awhile but doesn't look like it can be the best idea out there. Kiln
cement doesn't seem to really stick. Any suggestions?

PBVC Veneering Cement will work. Used with your ceramic blanket it will
withstand temperatures to 2500 degrees. Insulating brick must first be sealed
with Rigidizer.
Has to dry for about a day before you can fire up the kiln. Both available
through Laguna Clay 1-800-452-4862. Probably a good idea to also use pins
with clay buttons too. Will ensure a good hold.

Try sodiun silicate (waterglass) available from a drug store or your local
pottery supply house.

To stick fiber onto a door, I use a strcture of expanded metal and
angle iron, a 1" layer of insblok (fiber board) then attach the blanket
vertically with button of raku clay with long Kanthal wire pushed through to
the outside surface of the expanded metal and twist tight.
Then spray with rigidizer to seal those nasty fibers from the blanket.
Out doors have lasted years through frequent firngs. We're at least past the
50 on our newest kiln.

Marcia, what exactly is the =22rigidizer=22 spray you're using? Do you =
spray it on
fiber that will be exposed to the inside of the kiln? Is it stable to cone =
10?

Thanks, Bob

I get rigidizer from Minnesota Clay Co. who gets it from some local
manufacturer. It goes on the fire side of the fiber. Call Mn. Clay Co.
to find out the max. temp.
To glue it around doors and the floor of our car kiln, I use Archie Bray
Patch. I don't use the Bray Patch on doors because it is pinned in place.

I'm a little late in the day with this but I've been offlist for a few
days.
Make blind buttons out of stoneware clay and use them, held in place
with Nichrome wire, to hold the fibre to the walls. If you glue it the
expansion and contraction of the kiln frame/shell could cause the fibre
to tear as it doesn't do those things.

ps: blind buttons have a lug on the back with the hole in, not pierced
through the disc,

Marcia,
Does the Archie Bray Patch actually stick like a glue? Also, why the
rigidizer? Does that inhibit the insulating factors of the fiber at all? or
just seal it and thus protecting itself from me and me from it? Does that
help it hang any better ( I've seen our school raku kiln with fiber lined
bricks just sag and barely hang in there on a few metal staples)
I have had many suggestions to my original question and have just prolonged
the finishing of this kiln because of total confusion in the choices. Have
you followed all the responses on this so far?.........

sodium silicate and wire staples after sealing...with something?
ITC....I thought this was a kiln wash....a glue too? No wires?
Veeneer glue and sealing bricks first......really? with no wires?
and of course my first rejected idea of kiln cement...it isn't a glue and
doesn't seem well suited for this from what I have seen.
I guess the test of time on whatever I decide can always be redone differently
some day, but I'd rather do it right the first time. Anyone else want to jump
in here with their ideas? or maybe better yet, anyone had any problems with
any of the above?
thanks,
carol ratliff
