Here is a site that has lightweight safety glass with some of the protectio=
n
you need for quick viewing of cones. Enhanced Didymium-IR lens.

They are expensive, but so are your eyes,, priceless.
Place your cones in the kiln in front of the peeps. Before starting the
kiln, put a lighted candle(s) inside and close the door or lid and view the
cones through the peep. Make sure they are easily seen before starting the
firing. Have the cones all facing the same directions so you can recognize
them on quick glance. You shouldn't have to look for very long to identify
them and to the state of melt. Also try one of the new high intensity LED
mini flashlights, shining it on to the cones though the peep during firing.
If the kiln is in heavy reduction, pull the damper some until it goes into
oxidation before you open the peep to look, then return to reduction
atmosphere. Learn to associate kiln firing color with cone temperature so
you don't have to keep opening the peeps too often.
