reduction firing reds

thanks rimas for reminding me to post.

red in fact is one of the easiest colors
to achieve in reduction.

it is the fast cooling that gives potters fits.

if you just slow things down, and then re/lite
your kiln at 1900 and hold for bit, then
when it gets to 1700F just re/do the cool down,
and move the kiln back to 1900F. it just takes like
15 minutes. depending on how much gas you use in
the re/fire. hard to judge that. just crank the kiln back on.

you want the reds to go through that cooling cycle at
least twice.

so much about the actual color of the red has to do
with the temp you fire to.
cone 9 pink
cone 10 red
cone 11 purple/red mix

i have been doing experiments in red as we speak.
(that means the entire kiln was full of red.)
i have been using 4x25 white slip under...bright red over.
also, used my black glaze under red. it has been a dark speckled
pink and black. rather nice. (remember, pink and black is com'n back.)
and, again, that will depend on your cone temp.

as i told pete pinnel at nceca...`my god pete, are you using
your basic red glaze?`.
he said `not often`.
`well, i have been making tons of money
with that recipe...so, get crack'n.`
he smiled and said...`i know, i know.`
