On the inside of the kiln sitter face plate is a cam, a flat metal
part that has an oblong hole in it, through which the plunger passes
on its way to the outside of the kiln. Machined into the plunger is a
slit encircling the plunger. The cam (spring loaded) will catch in
that groove and keep the kiln on (keep contact inside the ceramic
switch which makes up the sitters on/off switch. Sometimes that cam is
obstructed by oxidation of the face plate, cam, or other parts. A
light sanding of the cam (both sides may free it up to opperate again.
You may have finally lost the spring which allows the cam to move and
capture the plunger, so check that to make sure it is not corroded.

Hoping this helps. I feel kind of bad because several years ago when I
purchased my first kiln (used) I made a point to disassemble my kiln
sitter and clean it up. I took many pictures and now I'm not sure
where they went! They were a great visual aid to reassembly and when
talking about fixes with other folks.

If I ever find them, I'll be sure to flickr them for future reference.

Hope this helps.
