I worked for a while at a small factory that produced cone 5 vitreous china=
; it was green glazed by spraying in a production line through a wide glaze=
booth. All the glazes, about 20 or so, were designed to fit the body and n=
ot crackle, except for one that was designed to do just that. The crackle g=

I've made a kind of crackle glaze by putting a ^6 glazed (bisqued) pot into
a ^06 bisque firing.

I did this the first time because I had room in the kiln and wanted to fill
it more to even out the firing. In an electric kiln, I now think it was
probably unnecessary, but I did this the first year I got my own kiln.

The glazed pot came out with serious cracks in the underfired glaze. The po=
t
didn't have a problem with being bisque fired twice. I then dipped this
twice-bisqued pot into a contrasting color glaze, and wiped off most of the
glaze on the surface, leaving the contrasting color glaze in the cracks of
the first ^6 glaze.

When I glaze fired the pot, it had a smooth (not crackled) glazed surface,
but visually it was crackled.

Both glazes were ^6 glazes that fit the clay well and I achieved a crackle
appearance on a food safe pot.

I've done this a number of other times, and the caveat is to be sure that
there isn't too much glaze on the pot, which can cause an otherwise stable
glaze to run or spit. You can imagine how I know this.
