Adding a gum binder will help with the dry powdery surface.
I'd suggest CMC.
Mix 25 grams dry powder CMC with quart water.
Let sit a couple days to wet the CMC powder or put in blender.
Little of this CMC solution added to glaze will do it.
Don't need much.
CMC is also organic so stored a long time may mold.

Hi Monica,

The best way is to sub in ball clay for the kaolin - do it with =3D20
calculation and keep the SiO2 and Al2O3 the same.

I can't do it for you now but I will when I get back in a couple of =3D20
weeks - just send me the recipe and the kinds of ball clay you can get.

Hi Monica=3D2C
put 15 grams of CMC into a pint of hot water. Mix well in blender or Oster=
=3D
type mixer.
add this to a gallon of H2O and use 100% in mixing your dry power materials=
=3D
recipe.

To add to an already liquid glaze=3D3B use 45 grams CMC to a quart H2O and =
ad=3D
d a=3D20
generous cup full per 1000 grams of liquid glaze. This will stop your powde=
=3D
r=3D20
problem and not effect the fired result.

When spraying a glaze=3D2C the fragile droplet matrix is easily disturbed b=
y =3D
handling=3D20
(leaving thumb and finger print smudges in the fired glaze) even when using=
=3D
CMC in the glaze
mix.=3D20
I spray over the sprayed glaze surface with the stronger CMC solution=3D3B =
be=3D
ing careful not to=3D20
saturate until it runs because this will also leave tracks in the fired gla=
=3D
ze.=3D20
When the over sprayed CMC dries and hardens one may then carefully handle t=
=3D
he sprayed work=3D20
for transport to the kiln and loading.=3D20
Some folks use hair spray=3D2C but in my opinion based on experience the CM=
C =3D
gum is a better=3D20
application for several reasons.

CMC also serves to help keep the glaze materials in suspension.

Recent example::: =3D20
When i heard that an institution of higher learning was charging folks $150=
=3D
0.00 US per head=3D20
to attend a workshop out at Don's=3D3B it irked me=3D2C so I've invited the=
Yav=3D
apai=3D20
College ceramics students and interested area potters to a free wood fire w=
=3D
orkshop=3D20
this coming weekend.

In prepping glazes in the guest glazing room for the workshop=3D2C I found =
tw=3D
o 2 gallon buckets=3D20
of "Cee Clear" and "Blue Flambe" someone had left behind from last firing.
(anyone know these glazes?) =3D20
Both had settled to hard cake in the buckets so I dumped about 50 grams of =
=3D
"Glass Magic"=3D20
in each=3D2C agitated a shake or two and left them to sit a few minutes whi=
le=3D
the Glass Magic=3D20
worked its magic.
A bit of mixing and the hard cake was dissolved.=3D20
Then I added something near 3% bentonite=3D2C a good shot of the strong CMC=
s=3D
olution=3D20
and stirred well.

Three days later the glazes are still in suspension=3D2C no appreciable set=
tl=3D
ing=3D2C =3D20
and a quick stir will have them ready to go when/if someone wants to use th=
=3D
em next Wednesday.

Who has time or excuse for standing around grunting away at glaze buckets w=
=3D
ith caked bottoms=3D20
each time they go to glaze pots when we have such ready means at our dispos=
=3D
al to=3D20
have otherwise?

I found the following information very interesting as to the uses of =3D
CMC:

Applications: widely used in food-making, detergent, papermaking,
oil-drilling, textile, dyeing, ceramics, construction, paint, welding,
battery, medicine, tobacco, toothpaste, cosmetics, etc.

Grades: 1. Food Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose)

2. Detergent Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose)

3. Oil-drilling Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose)

4. Paper Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose)

5. Textile, Dyeing Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose)

6. Ceramics, Construction, Paint Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl =3D
Cellulose)

7. Welding, Battery Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose)

8. Toothpaste Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose)

9. Tobacco Grade CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose)

10. CMS (Sodium Carboxymethyl Starch)

In reading about the industrial grade, found a variance in the purity =3D
from
50% to 99%. Most of the food grade powder was listed as 99% pure. Most =3D
of
this material is made in China. Some offer free samples, however that =3D
may be
enough to give you some for a lifetime as one needs very little to make =3D
a
batch. Otherwise it is sold at a minimum of metric ton quantities
Perhaps the ceramic suppliers order the industrial grade where mold is =3D
not a
problem if it is not necessary to be as pure..=3D20

Here is the URL for the both grades CMC=3D20
http://xycmc.en.alibaba.com/product/295066222-209753616/CMC_Powder.html=3D2=
0

Amazing the number of foods that this material is added to our food =3D
without
a mention in the ingredient listings.

Bonnie

I agree about adding CMC to harden your glaze. I do it all the time.
However, I have never had my CMC mold or rot. Do I have a different kind of
CMC? I purchased mine so long ago that I have forgotten the name of the
ceramic supplier where I got it.

I might add that if you use a blender, use very hot water and sprinkle the
CMC into it as it is blending. Perfect mixture and ready to almost use it
right away.

Regards,

Bonnie.

Hi Bonnie=3D2C=3D20

I have had CMC that spoiled=3D2C and some that did not=3D2C so just as a pr=
ophy=3D
lactic=3D20
measure=3D2C I put one finger of chlorine bleach in each gallon of mix.=3D2=
0
When added to the glaze there is little or no detectable odor of bleach and=
=3D
=3D20
my CMC and glazes are spoil safe.

I remember back=3D2C 30 years or so=3D2C I used a CMC that would dissolve r=
eadi=3D
ly in cold water.=3D20
Now have a small microwave in the studio to heat the water fast and get on =
=3D
with it.

I got some contaminated Red Iron Oxide when I first moved out here. Mixed u=
=3D
p a bucket of=3D20
"Mel's Garage Sale Temmoku" and when I opened it a week later I was sure th=
=3D
ere must be=3D20
a dead cat or rat rotting somewhere in the bucket.=3D20
Out came the bleach and the next firing had a lot of mirror black liner gla=
=3D
zing=3D20
as I quickly used up that glaze batch=3D3B while and with the windows open!=
!!

take care=3D2C
