yahoo mirrors clayart every day. it is easy to read
everything on the site, but you cannot post, as it
is not moderated...it is a mirror. just google clayart
and you will find many avenues. ( a great system
when you travel, or want time away from the emails.)
all posted material comes through this computer,
here in my basement. as it has for 15 years.
clayart is a listserv run through the computers
of the `american ceramics society`. they pay the
fee for the listserv each year. they have never
interfered with the running of the list, or the moderation.
that is up to me and the several folks that help when i am
on vacation from clayart. we cooperate with and send messages
from nceca in exchange for a `room` at the convention each
year. many clayarters are members of nceca. we support
their efforts and now have a fine relationship with their
directors. (TIME TO SIGN UP.)
there are other forums and places to chat
online. we keep this system because it `works`.
it is all email based and reaches out across the globe.
many prefer it to web based communication. and with
the digest system, you can pick and choose how you
receive clayart. (digest is one email with all the
posting sent at 1 a.m. each day.)
clayart has about 4200 working members from almost 90 countries
reading each day. in reality, one could double the
4200, as much of the time clayart reaches many venues
that have multiple readers, then add google and yahoo readers,
it is hard to estimate the numbers...but, it is large.
there have been several imitations of clayart and some people
go off in huffs and say they are going to `put us out of business`
with a new forum . it did not work, most are out of business.
it is a huge effort to run, moderate and keep
things running smoothly, and can be daunting. very few will do
it for very long. we applaud the groups that have kept at it.
we need all the communications we can get.
clayart is not for everyone. it has its ups and downs. we have
our dopes and bullies, and intellectual `wannabes`. but that
is part of any public domain. go to any school board meeting.
they show up there too. and note, the biggest complainers
on clayart never lend a hand, or come to the conventions
and help others. or, pay a dime.
by enlarge, this is a great group of working folks that love clay
and making things. those are the people that i have always
championed and worked for. this is a non-pay job for me, in fact
it costs a rather big chunk of money from my money pile as i have to have
the best high speed internet, and computer isp to keep it running
smoothly. (visi is a commercial isp/business oriented, and i must
pay extra for the service.)
running clayart is like owning a puppy for 15 years...great fun
most of the time...but then...a pain in the ass when you least
need it.
and the hidden work i do is helping the many that are rather
computer illiterate get on clayart, and stay on clayart. that may
mean 6 emails a day that have to be coded, set up and communicated.
but, doing it myself is quicker than teaching them with ten emails.
one of the best things any of you can do is try to get to a nceca conventio=
n/
clayart room.
you will meet the greatest bunch of people. we have so much fun and
learn from each other. and, the clayart stories are legend. `wink wink, y=
ou
know what i mean.` gossip, are you kidding...? us?
the `real people` of clayart are met in the flesh. i know hundreds first
hand and real. they are the greatest supporters of clayart.
(and, the ones that make a tear form...like the potter from poland that
reads clayart every day in a coffee shop, and loves it. his only connection=
to
the world of clay.)

As owner-moderator of PPIO ( clayart for overglaze artists ) , I
can tell you first hand what an immense amount of work it is. ( and
we are an unmoderated list ... so Mel and Joyce and the other mods
are doing more work than I am ) .. . and the amount of personal funds
that go into things at various times.
Its truly a labor of love .
Like Clayart, PPIO has its imitators and duplicators... most have
gone by the wayside . We've been at it since 1997 and while we are
not as big as clayart , we have a very loyal following that is
constantly expanding.... and we have our share of people I would l
love to choke too. ( and yes, the biggest complainers are the ones
who contribute the least )
My hat ( if I wore one ) is off to Mel for the massive effort he
puts into Clayart , from the daily grind of getting this listserv to
run smoothly to the above and beyond of making sure we all have a
great place to hang out at NCECA. YOU ROCK, MEL !
Getting this many people to work together relatively smoothly is
like herding cats....and Mel does that with grand style and a great
sense of humor. and believe me, it AINT easy !

PS. Yesterday , my husband and I got to go to an invitation
only taping of the Glenn beck show. He was here in Nashville and it
was really cool ! Pix and my impressions ( for anybody who gives a
flying crap ) are on our PPIO forum in the 'off the list' section :

It really isn't that much work. I've taken on the moderating of an
e-democracy list for my Minneapolis, Longfellow neighborhood.
Just use up to date software. The job description for the
e-democracy lists say approving moderated messages (first message is
moderated, then folks are set to unmoderated) should take about 15
minutes a day.

I've been running lists since about 1997. I've been moderating the
new list for over a month. *Yawn!*
Back in the day, you had to have a sponsor, a server and
listserv software. That hasn't been necessary for the past 15 years.
If you want to help with a neighborhood list where you live,
They even offer training for list moderators. check it out:
