I don't know about any "frenzy" - perhaps I've just not delved deeply eno=

There ARE "chlorine fumes" (which apparently may or may not include actua=

other dangerous chemicals released in a soda firing. When done in a
properly vented kiln such as you describe I doubt that it's much of an
environmental problem - there are much bigger environmental pollutants
around than a potter's kiln doing a salt firing.

I am not proposing that no one be allowed to do salt firings. Just that =

shouldn't be done in an old shell of an unvented kiln in your garage!

Is this truly a "frenziable" subject? It seems patently obvious to me th=

Nope, not true, and this is getting tiresome. There are no chlorine fumes
in the exhaust of a salt kiln. All chlorine atoms combine with water vapor
to produce hydrogen chloride gas, and you cannot call that gas "chlorine
fumes," because it is inappropriate use of the terminology. "Chlorine fumes=
"
means "chlorine gas" and there is no other way to read it. Let's use the
right terminology.

Regarding soda firing, what toxic chemicals do you think are in the exhaust=
?
Remember, all you are putting into a soda kiln is sodium carbonate - just
sodium, carbon, and oxygen. I understand that some of the carbon forms CO2=
,
and some of it combines with water vapor to produce a mild acid (is it
carbonic acid?), which accounts for the fact that soda kilns cause corrosio=
n
just as salt kilns do.

There are no such things as "dangerous chemicals" - only chemicals that can
be dangerous if handled improperly. Sort of like having just a little
knowledge about any subject - Have you ever been told that "thousands" of
high velocity meteors rain down on earth every day? They do, but somehow we
never hear about a person being hit.

Learn risks, access danger balanced by benefit, while being enlightened wit=

knowledge. Or - cower in the corner of your bedroom in fear - nobody gets
out of life without dying.

I just choose to not live in fear.
