our wood kiln was designed by donovan palmquist.
he does not design kilns that fire 40 percent loss.
he builds kilns that are even, reach temperature with
ease and fire perfectly.
that is how a master kiln builder always builds kilns.
thank you again donovan for the great kiln.

Mel, part of loss was not only due to the kiln, but also due to
aesthetic demands. As I mentioned in my previous post, many of the
pots I broke would not even be considered 2nds by you or me. It was a
very difficult job destroying them.
An as far as Kiln Builders go, Sensei's kiln was built and
rebuilt by the top Master Kiln Builder in Mashiko, Takmaki-san, from a
family of kiln builders. We were in the moku-hanga (woodblock
printing) club with Tamaki-san's wife. She is a little lady that
runs marathons. She once said to Jean, because Jean's print subjects
were so tradtional that, "Our children will not preserve traditional
Japanese culture, but Jean will."
Folks appreciate sincere students trying to preserve the way.
New is not ALWAYS better. Often it is, but not always.

Hi Mel -
Your point is well taken. Donovan Palmquist is one of the best kiln
designers/builders in North America, but it is important to clarify that he
doesn't build kilns that magically "reach temperature with ease and fire
perfectly." Regardless of who designed or built the kiln, the magic of a
successful firing in any non-automated fuel kiln is still in the people
tending the firing. If you get great results from Donovan's kiln design, i=
t
is mostly your doing.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
