I remember seeing it earlier and being disappointed that the UofMn's MFA
program wasn't included.

My friend Steve who went out East to work for Chris Gustin, came
back with a fiancee who is a potter and the daughter of John and
Andrea Gill. So I am learning a bit about Alfred. She's doing
graduate studies in Art Administration at St. Mary's. Their dream is
to open a Clay Center at Duluth.

Lee: I too was disappointed that USU was not included. I think the prof is
the person that makes it happen. I am a shameless self promoter so I would
be all over it like a fat kid on a Smartie.

I think that everyone who gained their MFA would be disappointed that
their university was not on the list. I also think that, just as in
USNews, there is far too much emphasis placed on the same schools year
after year at the expense of smaller or less known schools.

A lot has to do with the selection criteria. The standards and
emphases chosen by CM, or US News, or anyone else. are
not likely to be identical to your own requirements. You are
only going to do grad school once, and it will cost you a lot in
terms of time, effort, and cash. Spending the time beforehand
to do your own investigating will be well worth it. And visit!!!

Another source for MFA program info, without rankings or
editorializing, is the CAA (College Art Association) listings.
They list MFA programs in all disciplines, with a lot of statistical
info. This can lead you to programs you might not have heard
of.It won't tell you a lot of important things, like the 'style' of the
program, the emphasis, attitudes, faculty personalities and the
like, but it's a place to start. There are a lot of good faculty out
there doing great things with students at colleges you've never
heard of.

Listings, rankings mean squat. One needs to look at the instructors
work and what graduates are doing after program. It's people in the
program that make it what it is and this can change from year to year.
This means one needs to commit time to research.
