If you want to see the cones better at high temp, just use a very bright
flash light and you'll see the cones very easily in spite of reduction.
It is still advisable to wear a light welding goggles or a pair of glass
blowers glasses.

Someone mentioned using a blow dryer, set on hot, so as not to blow cold
air into the kiln. That sounded perfectly ridiculous to me, at 2300*F
there is not much difference between 72* and 120*F (hair dryers are not
allowed to reach 140*F.)
But it made me wonder if a torch blown into a peep would clear the
air enough to help see the cones? Will give that a try next time.
