Without treading too heavily on flat top enthusiasm, I think it's important
to say that there's absolutely no reason for anyone to believe that an arch
top would cost thousands more than a flat top kiln roof.
I would expect the cost of the few additional bricks required to form an
arch to be even less than the cost of the steel, bolts, and whatever
additional framing or superstructure may be required to hold a plane of
bricks together in tension.
Tens of thousands of ancient brick archways have survived for thousands of
years throughout the world without "adjustment."
Having read the "flat top" literature, and having had experience building
brick arches, it seems to me that the technical debate is "like comparing
apples and oranges."
Best to all,
Ellen Baker - Glacier, WA (where we can see our shadows today!)
