pyrometer question from clayarter

I've looked at online ceramic suppliers, but would like to know if any of
you have a preferred brand of digital pyrometer readout and K-type
thermocouple (sheath or ceramic beads or ?) for a front-loaded downdraft
natural gas kiln used for cone 10 reduction glaze and cone 06-04 stoneware
bisque firing?

Just a reminder: If you change the thermocouple type in your digital
electric kiln, you must also reconfigure the temperature controller and
change the thermocouple lead wires. Otherwise the temperature will be off.

K-type thermocouple wire: yellow, red (brown or yellow outer covering)

S- and R-type wire: black, red (green outer covering)

I've been using 2 - K type - 12 inches long in a porcelain protection tube
with a Fluke 52 digital pyrometer for many years fired to cone 10-11 with
great accuracy and no problems. I did take the protection tube off once to
use it elsewhere and unfortunately the unprotected thermocouple was fired t=
o
cone 11 causing it to warp and not fit back into the porcelain tube. It did
shorten the life of the thermocouple as it took about 5 years for it to fai=
l
while the other still works like new. I just received two new K type
thermocouples from Axner and will replace them both for the sake of
consistency.
