kiln in sections

I have a Duncan kiln that looks to be in 2 sections. The controller is in two
separate parts, one attached to each section. I want to separate the two
sections so that when I have smaller pieces, there isn't much wasted space.
The only problem is that the lid is attached in such a way that the two
sections have to be used together. I was wondering if anyone knows how I would
go about taking off the lid and reattaching it to the bottom section of the
kiln? Would I just unscrew it and redrill holes in the bottom section to
attach it there? If so, how deep are the holes supposed to be drilled? Do
they only go into the jacket, or into the brick, too? Or do I HAVE to attach
the lid at all? Thanks for the help,

Just remove the bottom section, if it's like mine it merely sits on an
unattached floor of soft brick.
