A source of Bismuth Sub Nitrate might be your nearest pharmaceutical
wholesale house. They may have obsolete stock that they will sell at a
discount . This can be converted into a resinate lustre by dissolving in a
warm solution of Pine Resin and Lavender Oil or Eucalyptus Oil.
A good Cone 8 base for a glaze that exhibits the qualities of Lead Glazes
can be formulated using a Soda Felspar (with minimal inclusions of Potash.)
provided you can get Kaolin, Silica and Whiting with minimal contamination
with Iron oxide. Using a 6 x 6 matrix where the Felspar range is from 50% t=
o
75% and the other ingredients range from zero to 25% should yield some
brilliantly reflective transparent glazes that work well over underglaze
colour or coloured slips. Run line blends with minimal fractions of either
Manganese carbonate or one of the Umber painting pigments to get the glaze
to take on a yellow cast without detracting from other optical qualities.
Wishing a creative year to All,
