Hi,
Since the permit=3D92s not pulled so the plumber=3D92s not hired so kiln ha=
s
no gas, I=3D92m still chewing on my flue setup. If you=3D92ve tinkered with
flue location and constellation in an updraft kiln and can share your
experience on how that effected your evenness of atmosphere, I=3D92d
really appreciate it.
Reading up on kilns revealed flue symmetry on most historical updraft
kilns, and the photos in Olsen=3D92s book of his own kilns showed
symmetrical exit holes. However, an old Olsen 36 (?) I looked at
wasn=3D92t symmetrical (two 5 X 5 squares, one almost centered and one
closer to the door). Is this standard or is it a fluke of the
particular specimen?
Olsen Himself writes, =3D93Whether it is best to use one big exit flue or
two or more is determined by proper bricklaying,=3D94 which suggests he
thinks the effect is minimal. Since I gather from his book that he
grooves on flame-kissed ware, though, and since kisses aren=3D92t kisses
if they=3D92re applied systematically, he may be looser than I am.
So, clayartisti, if you have an off-center or asymmetrical flue in an
updraft kiln, have you noticed consistent differences in reduction
effects in different locations?
Thanks,
Jeff
