Creativity and the Electric Kiln

Discover something new

Do you think you're limited by firing in an electric kiln? Or=3D20
have you gotten in a rut using the same old techniques with the=3D20
same old glazes and getting the same old results? Then maybe=3D20
it's time to take a look at what others are doing with this=3D20
remarkable tool.

In Electric Firing: Creative Techniques you'll discover=3D20
artists using majolica, underglazes, and slips to get=3D20
astonishing results. Maybe you're interested in Pennsylvania=3D20
redware, china painting, neriage or engobes -- there's a=3D20
little of everything all with one thing in common -- the=3D20
electric kiln.

Here is where studio artists share their research and=3D20
artistic successes to both inspire and inform you about=3D20
the possibilities of electric firing. And if you're not=3D20
totally satisfied, there are even instructions for how=3D20
to convert your kiln (preferably an old one) to fire=3D20
with gas or wood.

Discover traditional techniques

Before electric kilns, work had to be fired in saggars to=3D20
protect them from the contamination of coal and wood ash.=3D20
Because of the clean heat elctric kilns provide, potters have=3D20
once again popularized Pennsylvania redware, majolica, China=3D20
painting and luster work because they no longer have to hassle=3D20
with unwanted ash on the surface.

Try out new techniques

Maybe you'd like to try some new decorating approaches? You'll=3D20
find Laura Kukkee's slip decoration or Faith Rahill's neriage=3D20
blocks a great starting point. And if you're into mixing your=3D20
own glazes, Gerald Rowan provides recipes for engobes, slips,=3D20
glazes and self-glazing clays, while Jayne Shatz shares her=3D20
cone 6 recipes for some beautiful glazes. For the wood ash=3D20
and wood fired look, Harry Spring and Richard Busch show how=3D20
they duplicated these traditional special effects in an=3D20
electric kiln.

I learned ceramics back in the days when gas kilns were for=3D20
potters making pots and electric kilns were for hobbyists=3D20
making ceramic Christmas trees. Times have certainly=3D20
changed -- all for the better -- and I wouldn't trade=3D20
my computer-controlled electric kiln for anything. It's=3D20
easy to use, predictable, and capable of providing more=3D20
firing options than any gas kiln ever could. By experimenting=3D20
with glazes and surfaces, I can get the same stunning effects=3D20
as gas and more -- more colors, more control, more special=3D20
effects, more of just about everything. If you're looking=3D20
for fresh ideas, you'll enjoy Electric Firing and all the=3D20
great ideas ceramic artists have come up with.
