Hi Again:

Ian Currie will be doing a workshop at The Marjorie Sherman Community
Ceramics Center in Salem, Oregon on the 18th and 19th of April. Ian will
also do a free slide lecture, probably at the Library in Salem, on Friday
the 17th, in the late afternoon or early evening. More on this later.

Ian will lead groups of participants through the mixing of glazes for
various temperatures, in accordance with his methods of volumetric blending,
which is a mega-labor saving technique. There is a likelihood that we will
do earthenware, mid-fire, and stoneware temp glazes. The tiles will be fired
on Sat. night so that results can be discussed at the Sunday session. Each
participant will be able to take home several 35 glaze assessment tiles
along with sufficient knowledge and experience to continue their own studies
and experiments.

This workshop and Ian's methods are for ALL levels, professionals to
beginners, and he especially encourages newbies and thoses unfamiliar to
glazemaking to do this. I hope that many will sign up for this workshop and
take advantage of the opportunity of exposure to one of the great glaze
minds of our time.

I don't think the tuition is set yet but they are talking about somewhere
around $90.00. You can reserve a space and get more info by calling the
Salem Art Assoc., at (503)581-2228. Ask to speak with Amy Schwartz, the
education coordinator. If you don't want to call long distance, e-mail
questions to me and I'll ask for you and reply via e-mail.

regards, Craig Martell-Oregon

Just finished the weekend workshop provided by Wendy Hampton in Poulsbo WA
with Ian Currie and his magical glaze formulation and testing system.

He's cracked the code for THIS previous glaze-ignoramous.

Picture working on line blends alone, then picture arranging them in such a
way that, instead of only a line of information, you get a rainbow fan-out
of multiple (and duplicatable) results.

Not only that, but you develop the ability to analyze just about any glaze
and create your own multi-sectioned tile index for future reference and
further exploration. This is the kind of tool you will be armed with
after completing Ian's class.

Sound complicated? It looks that way at first, but Ian makes it so clear
that, now that I'm armed with this new knowledge, I feel like I can tackle
any glaze.

Those of you who are in locations to take advantage of this class, RUN to
the phone and enroll!!

And applause for Wendy who did a great job running a really well-organized
and prepared location for the workshop. Great party and band for the
afterward too!

Hi All,

I also had the pleasure of attending the Ian Currie glaze workshop at
Wendy's beautiful studio. I can not think of money better spent than what
I invested in this workshop. I lost count of all the "AH HA" experiences
I had. Ian is a very giving person and presented his method in a very
understandable way. Hands-on experience is the best kind and we got to do
a bunch of hands on work. And the paperwork hand-outs we received will be
treasured reference material. Glaze development will never be as
intimidating a prospect ever again. I can not think of a better, or more
practical, way to get a feel for what is happening in a glaze.

I remember just enough high school chemistry to know what the periodic
chart of elements is but I wouldn't be able to tell you the difference
between moles and gophers in a glaze calculation program. With Ian's
method though, I can actually SEE what happens when you vary the
alumina-silica ratio. I can also see a time when I will be able to look
at a glaze and say to myself "Oh, that is a magnesium glaze" or "This must
be a high feldspar glaze". Understanding glaze calculation will be a
valuable tool in the future, for me, but I know that actually SEEING the
results with Ian's method will make that a lot easier to do.

If you THINK you MIGHT get into developing or trouble-shooting your own
glazes someday or WANT to get a jump-start on the process, DO NOT miss the
opportunity to attend Ian's workshop if it is available.

Well folks, it's all it's touted to be - a revelation in analysis technique
of glazes. First day I was mind boggled and brain dead by the end of the
day. It's tedious work, making those tiles, but oh, my, the knowledge that
comes from seeing the results! I will consider carefully before embarking
on sets to test in my own studio, because of the work involved, but I am
quite certain that I WILL do it myself. Already have a couple of glazes
from the workshop that I'm interested in checking out on larger items. And,
yes, I do feel like I can be my own guru now! Wouldn't dare try to "help"
anybody else, but feel I can at least help myself now, instead of screaming
"help!" everytime I run into a problem. He'll be in New Jersey next, then
Santa Clara, and that's it for this swing around the country. He says he's
willing to come back, if ya'll get enough new workshops planned.

Well, I can't resist a lead in like that. For those of you in the southern
PA/northern MD area, there is another Ian Currie glaze workshop coming up on
October 6 & 7 in Harrisburg, PA on the campus of Harrisburg Area Community
College. We have been very busy gathering equipment, and casting and molding
Lots of glaze grids in preparation. We have plenty of test grids ready and
have a few more spaces available for more people to attend. This is a "hands
on" workshop. Participants will mix and test multiple variations of glazes,
using the techniques from his most recent book, and analyze the results on
the second day.

For those of you who would like to know more about Ian Currie: he is missing
the Olympics, and doing a fall tour in the U.S. from Queensland, Australia.
He has been working with clay and glazes for over 30 years. He is well known
for his methods he has developed for studying glazes - a systematic
technique that reveals glaze principles while discovering beautiful glazes.
He is the author of two books. His original book, "Stoneware Glazes - A
Systematic Approach" presents his "grid method", based on the Seger-formula.
His most recently published book, "Revealing Glazes - Using the Grid
Method", uses a recipe-based system, which makes the grid method more
accessible to potters regardless of their understanding of glaze chemistry.

The price is quite reasonable....$75 for the 2 day workshop and an
additional $25 if you would like to purchase the book.

You may send a check payable to Jim Lard at

There are some spaces left for the Ian Currie Workshop scheduled for
Oct. 21/22 at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD.

The fee is $75 and includes all test tiles, materials and firing.

As many of you have heard, this is an extremely informative and valuable
method of learning about glazes and Ian is an extremely able and wonderful
presenter.

If you ever felt that you should know more about glazes then this is an
opportunity that should not be missed. His most recent book on glazes
will also be available for purchase as well.

I am trying to round-up people and a sponsor in the El Paso--Las Cruces
area for a Glaze Workshop in the late March--Mid May 2002 period.

Currie's book Revealing Glazes is the best, most straight forward
approach I have ever read. All reports from his workshops that I have
seen give him a 4 star rating.

Hope that all you West Texas/New Mexico/Arizona clay folks will jump on
this with me.

Please contact me off list for information, ideas, etc.

I had the pleasure of hosting a workshop for Ian Currie - the first stop on
his Spring tour.
His grid method is a fantastic tool for understanding, diagnosing and
exploring glazes. It is now an important tool in our studio arsenal.
There were many levels of experience represented in our group, beginner to
26 year veterans, learning, sharing and growing as potters.
Ian is a gracious teacher, infinitely patient and kind. If he is doing a
workshop near you, GO! You will be enriched!

Dear Pat;

No news to us in Eugene! Ian starts at 9am sharp on Saturday
at North Eugene H.S. here in the Emerald Empire. He's been working
with me for a week in the studio, and making pots side by side has
been loads of fun. He's pretty easy to care for too! We have two
places left, so call 541-342-8429 if you are near Eugene this weekend
and want to uncover the secrets of glaze formulation. Glad your
workshop was well-received!

Cheers, Hank in Eugene

We just finished our weekend hosting Ian and 18 others for his 2 day
workshop on the "Grid Method."

If this workshop is offered anywhere near you, or for that matter, within
driving distance or whatever, do yourself a favor and don't procrastinate.

Do this workshop no matter where it is or what it costs.

You will learn an incredible amount. You will learn that glaze testing and
glaze chemistry is accessible to all, no matter what your level of
education.

We had beginners with no knowledge, and others with lots of knowledge.

This is a workshop and presentation that is hands on with lots of
interaction with Ian and those participating.

Do yourselves a favor and take his workshop. I am glad I did.
Ian is a wonderful teacher and a warm and genuine person. I am pleased to
have made his acquaintance and his friendship.

Clayart rocks and so does the Ian Currie workshop. I just spent two days at
El Camino College (LA, California area) at the Ian Currie workshop. Now I am
eager to test glazes. Ian is a good teacher. Thanks to him the parts of a
glaze and putting it together make sense. Sure, this is elementary glaze
chemistry, but that is all I need right now. Sometimes you just need that
little push to get started and that's what the workshop provided.

Oh, and the participants were interesting as well. I met Bamboo Karen and a
lurker named Kris. There were several teachers there as well - one from the
high school level (wish I had the option to take pottery when I was in high
school) and one from the University of CA at Long Beach and potters at all
levels - expert to newbie. So, rock on, those of you who are about to meet
Ian at San Marcos.

Ian mentioned that he will be back in March. So those of you who haven't yet
experienced an Ian Currie workshop might want to think about finding a venue
for one.

I am not related to Ian, nor did I receive anything in exchange for the above
comments, i.e. this is not an advertisement.

Thank you, Ian Currie, for the two day workshop you presented in
Tennessee September 12-13.
All the books I have read still don't measure up to the way you
explained the process of good glaze making. My books are better
references for me now, but the basic knowledge you provided suddenly
shed a light on the whole process of making glazes. Now I know I can
tweak a glaze until I produce exactly the surface I want, in a much
shorter amount of studio time.
It was a pleasure to host your workshop and I know all who attended
share the appreciation that I do in learning your method.
