this is amazing. it is what i believe with all my heart.
it is what we need in clay, life...the future.

this is not some goofy politician talking about
`solindra solar panels`. open source is going to
change the world.

Agreed. This is one of the most powerful concepts out there. There are a
lot of people out there working along these lines. I'm posting a few that
I've been following below:

Open source wheelchair design...low cost, better fit for conditions,
locally built and repairable:

http://www.whirlwindwheelchair.org/index.htm

Open Source prosthetics design:

http://openprosthetics.org/

"NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) is a free and open source screen reader
for the Microsoft Windows operating system. "

A Wikipedia type website with projects described:

Seed-Savers

While not strictly speaking open source, it's not closed source...warming
system for newborns in very rural areas:

Of course, Potters for Peace:

What I really like is the concept of a "power module". Want to use the
tractor? Attach the pm and go. Time to pug clay? Attach the pm and go.

Having experience from the farm with quick coupling hydraulics I can see
that this concept is a winner.

Now that I am a city dweller and not as spry and strong as i used to be the
size of the machines is a little too large, but some could easily be scaled
down to city lot size. Let's see, I could use a tiller and a power wagon
and a chipper and a trash compactor and a snow plow and a ... Better get
those welding skills back in shape.

Earl...
Dream a little dream with me.

This is really inspiring Mel. This is exactly what we conversed about,
in relation to being an artist/potter last week:
Back when I was first starting as a potter, I built a potters wheel,
extruder, pug mill, and kiln for well under one thousand dollars.
A thousand $$ and I was in business for myself. This is also
the mission of Potters for Peace.

It is exciting to see this concept expanded to cover more complex
machinery, which, once broken down, is really not so complex
after all. Of course, as a rural farmer/forest land owner, I and my
neighbors have always thought along these lines.
