i have sent out 15 copies of the small kiln plan pdf.
that ran a few years back in pmi magazine.
it was a project that kurt and i put together.
we have five of those kilns chugging along. hay creekers.
the kiln in the plan is going to be at the farm
this spring. kurt's.
nice memories.
good luck to those that are actually going to build
that kiln. it sure is a dandy.
fires fast, efficient, and is never going to
drive you nuts because it is too big.
there are many that `chase ` their kilns.
so big they cannot get enough work done to fill them.
kurt and i used to laugh...a half day on the wheel, like
forty pots will make a wonderful firing in that pdf kiln.
my take is always: `your kiln should never be larger
than the amount of pots you can make in a week.`
in my case....that is one hundred pots. so, my kiln is 40+ cubes.
but, the same kiln that is in the plan, but twice as big.
the joy of the flat top nils lou plan.
make it any size you wish. propane, natural gas, and it can be
converted to wood/gas combination if you wish. (see his book for that
plan.)
`the art of firing` is a great book. nils hit the mark on that one.
i greatly admire nils and fred olson for their work in bringing quality
kilns to the average person. and, of course the dozens of folks that
have made our (clayart) book a huge success. mills, hendley, vince p,
bob anderson, bob fritz and on and on and on. donovan palmquist has
done the perfect story of building an arch. the kilns of both men and
women. no gender issues in clay. lindemen, selsor, pancioli and on and on.
