The Celadon Capital =3D97Longquan
Village=3D20

Longquan (meaning Dragon Spring) is located southwest of
Zhejiang Province at the mountain summit of the province with beautiful
landscape.=3D20

=3D20

Longquan is considered the first in history to produce
celadon porcelain. Longquan kiln was originated in the third century AD. Lo=
=3D
ngquan
Kiln is also called =3D93Ge Kiln=3D94 (=3D93Ge=3D94 means elder brother) an=
d the bi=3D
rthplace of
crackle glaze. Ge Kiln is also one of the top five imperial kilns in the So=
=3D
ng
Dynasty.=3D20

=3D20

In Chinese culture=3D2C jade was often compared to=3D2C or used to
symbolize=3D2C the virtue of people. Chinese ceramists would try to match t=
he=3D
natural
color of the jade from human-made material of celadon. The softness of the
color and the hardness of the material combined together perfectly=3D2C whi=
ch=3D
was the
ideal style in traditional Chinese aesthetics.=3D20

=3D20

Four of the most important celadon techniques include:
celadon glaze preparation=3D2C heavy glaze decoration=3D2C multi-glazing an=
d fi=3D
ring=3D2C and
crackle glaze decoration. Among the variations of Longquan Kiln Celadon=3D2=
C =3D
the Lavender
Grey and Plum-green variations are most admired.=3D20

=3D20

In 2001=3D2C I took an eight-hour overnight bus ride through the
bumpy and narrow mountain road from Hangzhou. In 2002=3D2C led with a group=
o=3D
f
American ceramic artists I went to Shanglin Lake=3D2C another ancient celad=
on=3D
kiln
site in Zhejiang Province. The highway was completed by 2006=3D2C and now=
=3D2C =3D
it takes
about four hours from Hangzhou to Longquan and several big changes have sta=
=3D
rted
from that time.=3D20

=3D20

2009=3D2C Longquan Celadon was included on the list of
Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO (United Nationals
Educational=3D2C Scientific and Cultural Organization). =3D20
