I have never done this but one possibility would be filter
paper/blotting paper which is thick and extremely absorbent. Both in
the US and UK it is often called 3MM paper in labs. Moreover I believe
they manufacture a kind with plastic stiffeners running through.
I'm not sure where you could buy it if you don't have lab contacts
unfortunately.
Your local art store may sell a thick blotting paper you could somehow
stiffen (I suspect normal blotting paper would not keep it's form.
One idea would be to dry the slip soaked blotting paper until the slip
a very soft leather hard. This could then be folded up, and any crack
that appear folded over? You might do successive quick dips, letting
the paper dry some in between, to prevent it from being thoroughly
soaked.
Or possibly make a form from paper clips and somehow drape the slip
shaped blotting paper over it.
Not a perfect solution, but I hope it pushes in the right direction.

Debby, I have seen people using a glossy paper that stood up after it =3D
was dipped in slip, but never saw the outcome after firing. My guess is =3D
that clean glossy paper will be expensive. You might want to try =3D
magazine pages. I just wonder if some of the printing inks might stain =3D
the clay. It is also possible that it will not absorb enough slip, due =3D
to the interference of the original treatment of the paper, just like =3D
the other paper that you are already using.
My suggestion would be to create a paperclay and fold that into your =3D
chatterbox. You can roll the clay out paper thin, or you make the clay =3D
into a slip and pour it thinly over a surface and let it dry out until =3D
it is usable. There is a specific point of dryness that you can fold =3D
paperclay without it cracking. The challenge will be to find that exact =3D
dryness, but the neat thing about paperclay is that you can fix cracks =3D
it at any stage of the making and drying process, by just filling it in =3D
with fresh slip.
I hope I did not push you too far off track with this suggestion.....

Subject: paper that absorbs porcelain cast slip
Please help clayarters - I am trying to make chatterboxes and dip them =3D
in slip - I have dipped lots of things in this slip - material etc and =3D
it always works well. But not this project. (has been a nightmare from =3D
the beginning )
Because the paper is a folded chatterbox with lots of angles - if I use =3D
thin paper to absorb the slip or use too much slip the form collapses =3D
If I use thicker paper it keeps the form and looks good I am not =3D
absorbing enough slip for it to hold cause they disintegrate
Has anyone dipped paper in slip and it has held its form and fired well
If so please can you point in the right direction as what paper you =3D
used.
Thanks for any help you can give me
Kind regards
