Here is the official spiel:
Kevin and JoAnne DeKeuster will co-lead this demonstration workshop. Altho=
=3D
ugh the couple shares a studio space and a love for wood fired ceramics, th=
=3D
eir work is diversely different. Kevin=3DE2=3D80=3D99s main focus is wheel=
throw=3D
n objects, while Jo=3DE2=3D80=3D99s work is strictly hand built.
Kevin will demonstrate throwing functional and sculptural forms reaffirming=
=3D
his belief that one can simultaneously be successful as both a functional =
=3D
potter and an artistic clay artist. Kevins emphasis will include encouragi=
=3D
ng the observer to create functional work that will have an individual styl=
=3D
e and flair. This, he believes, cannot be achieved without first learning =
=3D
proper techniques of the craft, then adding artistic style. With his sculp=
=3D
tural work his main focus will be on creating vessels by combining thrown p=
=3D
ieces and adding hand built details.=3D20
JoAnne will demonstrate her unique hand built slab techniques. She will sh=
=3D
are with the observer the many techniques and tricks of the trade that she =
=3D
has learned over the years from her many mentors. The tips range from cons=
=3D
truction and decoration, to drying and firing. She will also share her jou=
=3D
rney as her style developed from simple press mold plates to the pieces she=
=3D
creates today. It is her belief that as an artist, one must develop a dis=
=3D
tinctive style, but within that style your work needs to continually grow a=
=3D
nd evolve
JoAnne and Kevin DeKeuster are full time professional artists that currentl=
=3D
y reside in the Taos New Mexico Area. Kevin was born in Racine, Wisconsin.=
=3D
He attended Milton College, in Milton Wisconsin on football scholarship. =
=3D
It was there that he received his B.F.A. in ceramics. JoAnne grew up near=
=3D
the small town of Waumandee, Wisconsin. She received a B.A. in Art Educat=
=3D
ion from the University of Wisconsin =3DE2=3D80=3D93 Eau Claire. After mar=
rying,=3D
the couple moved to Arizona. Together they continued their study of art a=
=3D
t Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff Arizona, receiving a Masters deg=
=3D
ree in ceramics. Coursework at NAU included travel and study in Japan. Af=
=3D
ter completion of their Masters degrees, Jo and Kevin continued to spend su=
=3D
mmers in Flagstaff. They began working for the university as kiln assistan=
=3D
ts and eventually each taught the summer Noborigama Wood Fire class. Their=
=3D
work is greatly influenced by the wood-fired kilns located in Flagstaff an=
=3D
d Japan. All of the couples=3DE2=3D80=3D99 ceramic artwork is fired with wo=
od.
