Thanks to Jan Jokinen regarding post on Yukio Yamamoto. He is a very
neat person who inspires a person to do their best..in fact demands it
of you! He came to Canada at great personal expense of funds and time
to help pass on the legacy of wood fired pottery. Yukio is not a
traditional Japanese Potter...ask Rudi Audio, Don Reitz, Don Bendell,
Peter Volkus(pardon the spelling). He is very modern if that is the
correct word. I suggested one time that I bring my brick layer son down
to do the brick work under his supervision and he told me very clearly
that he wanted the brick not to be smooth and neat. He wanted the brick
to have personal interaction with the fire to produce effects that could
not be obtained by allowing a simple straight flame. At least that is
what I got out of the conversation in English and Japanese! He did show
my son what he wanted and how to build kilns ==in fact both sons David
and Bruce who took time off work for no pay to help him build the kilns
learned a tremendous amount from him. A lot of drawings were done in
the dirt around the kilns to see that they got done the exact way that
he wanted them. There was nothing haphazard about those kilns - believe
me. If you want a list of his credentials Tony please E mail me.
Linda Christianson came to our kilns to fire the anagama in a workshop
organized by Cathi Jefferson. It was a great workshop and a wonderful
time was had by all. I did not get to work with her as I am not a
potter but judging from the response everyone had a great time. I did
very much enjoy her slide show of her work and life. She is a very
special person and down to earth person and I was personally very
impressed with her. We are all lucky to share her knowledge.
Please feel free to come and visit our kilns .. they are a delight and
a great experience in cooperation to fire.
