I have an abundance of Common bricks over from construction and kiln brick.
And wonder if there are any who have devised a passable kiln off as bbq in
a sub division.i have had a big gas kiln in former home but that was built
in 1970's when such was easier to get in without problems.
I would be doing updraft cone 6 reduction with blower burners off either
propane or natural gas both abailable now.

I have an Olympic Torchbearer gas kiln that was no problem installing
in Urban Minneapolis. I just needed a licensed plumber and
inspection and no "special permission.)

If I want to build a larger kiln, I need 80% of neighbors
within 100 yards of the kiln signing a petition saying it is okay
(same system as having chickens in the back yard.) I thought getting
neighbors used to my commercial gas kiln would pave the way for a
bigger one in the future, if I go that way. That is the way Kerry at
Dock 6 Pottery went for her car kiln.

I had the same experience as Lee: only had to hire a plumber who got the
gas permit.
Still had to build safe hoodwork and ventilate for the inspection, but that
was the plan
anyway - main thing is it wasn't really the permitting nightmare I expected=
.
Hope it works that way for you, too.

Peggy, a lot depends on what your local zoning allows. Being up front and a=
=3D
sking how you can make the kiln comply with whatever safety regulations the=
=3D
y have would be better than trying to deceive them. Who knows, you might fi=
=3D
nd some folks interested in making clay things enough to help. =3D0A=3D0A=

I agree with Jeff that to go legal and permitted is the best route.
=3D20
He hired a plumber who was evidently gas certified. Those folks usually hav=
=3D
e a bit of an "in" over Suzi or Joe Q who walk in off the street fumbling t=
=3D
o explain their plans. We usually make it sound dangerous=3D2C where as a p=
ro=3D
walks in=3D2C knows what to say and not say=3D2C and is usually known and =
trus=3D
ted by those who issue and inspect the permitted work.
=3D20
Now as to the concealing in a BBQ idea: =3D20
A potter from this list had a conversation with me several years ago about =
=3D
this very idea. She can chime in here??? =3D20
=3D20
In dealing with each other=3D2C Neighbors run more on their emotions=3D2C s=
ensu=3D
al desires and fulfillments than on intellect. Some where near the top of t=
=3D
he list is safety=3D2C their stomach and conviviality.=3D20
=3D20
So the BBQ is a great idea as long as you first tell them that you make pot=
=3D
tery and give them each a mug=3D2C bowl=3D2C or small vase. Best over casua=
l co=3D
ffee and not as a one time group affair. This is where you divide and conqu=
=3D
er and win the allies you may need later to win over any resistance. =3D20
=3D20
Then they will ask about the process and you get to tell them about your st=
=3D
ate of the art BBQ "oven" which allows you to bake bread and pizzas as well=
=3D
to "bake" the pots to make the glaze permanent=3D2C and which also doubles=
a=3D
s a BBQ grill. Do not say "fire" anywhere in your conversation. Speak glowi=
=3D
ngly of so-n-so from X-company who come out and installed everything you ne=
=3D
eded. In the same breath invite them over for a neighborhood BBQ and start =
=3D
planning.
=3D20
The BBQ planning and event will distract them from dreaming up fears of the=
=3D
unknown and after they have relaxed with a full belly among folks=3D2C at =
le=3D
ast pretending to be friends=3D2C they will feel safe and not give your bre=
ad=3D
and pottery baking contraption further thought except=3D3B 'can I come ove=
r =3D
and see or play too?'
=3D20
Once you have demonstrated that you can operate without blowing up the neig=
=3D
hborhood=3D2C you can invite them to a kiln opening and begin to gently edu=
ca=3D
te them about clay and kilns.=3D20
=3D20
Don't ever lie=3D2C just spoon feed the truth with time for digestion and a=
cc=3D
eptance between spoonfuls.
=3D20
Side story: a Chef friend and I built a wood fired pizza oven on a single h=
=3D
orse hauler trailer. Ran it at 1=3D2C500f=3D2C guaranteed 8" pizzas=3D2C ma=
de whi=3D
le you watch=3D2C 4 minutes from time the order was taken. We were at the =
Or=3D

I sold pots=3D2C Chef Jeff and Cindy=3D2C their teen daughter and my son ke=
