I have some new photos of the damage to the Hamada museum. I was
there on the one year anniversary of the earthquake. I missed the
special events, which included potters working at the old Hamada
studio. I was there during their break, but it was nice to see fresh
work at the wheel. The Hamada workshop always struck me like a
ghost museum, especially compared to Kawai's museum studio in Kyoto.
At Kawai's, it feels like he just stepped out for a cup of tea and he
might come back at any moment. The working studio at Hamada's felt
just like this.
Folks in Mashiko are grateful for people's good wishes,
prayers and financial support. Yoshiko Fudeya, Kei Shimaoka and Euan
Craig expressed their personal thanks, which I share with everybody
who helped.
I got to hear my friend's first person accounts of their
experiences during the earthquake. Which made it real for me.
The shirts are nice! I bought 3 when I was in Mashiko!
