I was delighted to open today's email from Ceramic Arts Daily just now and
discover that my DVD on Glazing and Decorating has been published. The
project has been a long time in the making and it's great to have it
finally out as a "pre-sale." It's the second DVD my son Alan and I made
together -- the first was on Wheel Throwing. This one felt more complex
and ambitious in the making. Perhaps mirroring the fact that I find
glazing and decorating more complex and difficult than throwing? For sure
it is harder to teach -- so many fussy details and so many topics to
cover! We showed a range of ways to apply glaze and covered paper and wax
resist, a variety of block printing techniques, and some ways to decorate
on leather-clay. There are also short sections on glaze mixing and glaze
chemistry. The most fun part though was to step back from the hands-on
techniques and talk about design. I used pots from our collection plus
some diagrams and rules of thumb to exemplify design concepts. It was
challenging!
