There was a post about zinc and Colemanite (or Gertsley Borate and how =3D
they were substituted for one another). From experience the zinc is in =3D
the RO column and is a metallic oxide. The calcium borate (B2 03falls =3D
into the unity molecular structure under the R2 )3 column and is a very =3D
strong flux. Zinc is a potential flux , but they are traditionally not =3D
substituted for one another, but then it is worthwhile to try subbing al =
=3D
sorts of materials. For example Shaner Red calls for EPK. I have =3D
subbed Zircopax for the clay and the glaze is red mat where thin and =3D
yellow slightly satin toward glossy with iron red specks from the iron =3D
in the body.=3D20
Here is a cone 10 fake ash glaze using Albany slip. The glaze is known =3D
as Hay's Drip. I have substituted Zinc for barium in the glaze ands the =
=3D
one with zinc is more bleached in nature.
The glaze is: (it does not add to 100, Don't worry it's correct. Cone 9 =3D

Albany 60
Whiting 30 =3D20
Barium 16 or zinc 16.
I have made a variation of the Hay's glaze and it stays put on a =3D
vertical surface if not applied too thickly, even with colemanite added. =

There are other great faux ash glazes being used today, most of them are =
=3D
very high in whiting and use Alberta Slip in place of Albany slip. =3D20
One of the best wood ash glazes I have used over the years is one of =3D
Richard Aerni's glazes. For the wood ash I use Apple wood ash from my =3D
sons wood fired oven, which produces a pure white ash with little =3D
unburned materials.
The glaze (cone 9-10) is:
Wood Ash 50
Spar 12.5
Whiting 12.5
OM 4 12.5
Flint 12.5
Basic colorants are also added to this base. I don't spray the glaze, I =
=3D
erratically brush the glaze on .
I'm just passing on some things that I have found to be true foe me, but =
=3D
not trying to convince anyone of anything. =3D20
