This weekend I've been unloading all the brick for our kiln building
workshop led by Kent McLaughlin at Shakerag Workshops in June. As I moved 3
tons of brick, I thought of the joy of understanding why and how a kiln
works - how we can manipulate temperature and soda or salt to create the
effect we want. I don't understand kilns very well myself, even though I
have been firing reduction and soda/salt kilns for years, and I'm looking
forward to working with Kent so that I can understand how a kiln works and
learn how to manage one better, rather than relying only on my personal
trial-and-error experience. We have two places left in this class set for
June 10-16: if you too would enjoy knowing why a kiln works as it does, and
how to build or manage your kiln to get the results that you want, think
about joining us to build a small soda/salt kiln. As we build, Kent will
help us to understand the advantages of different kinds of kilns, the
effects of varying firing schedules, and the optimal mixture of air and
flame to produce the results we want. Check out the Shakerag website for
more details (www.shakerag.org), or contact me for more information about
Kent's class.
