digital controller

All,

I have been in the process of trying to wire an inexpensive PID (digital co=
ntroller) with a 40 amp solid state relay to my small Skutt 818P. I followe=
d the wiring diagram provided with the unit, but when I powered up the unit=
for a dry run, the solid state relay exploded. Does anyone have any experi=
ence with these kind of electronics that could give me some pointers, and m=
aybe an answer as to what I did wrong here. I know just enough about wiring=
to be dangerous apparently.

I think we need a whole lot more information before we hazard any guesses=

here.

Wow, nevermind I figured out what I did wrong. For some reason there are tw=
o completely different wiring diagrams. I followed the one that came with t=
he unit. The one I found online for the unit is correct. The one I have wit=
h the unit is wrong. Well that was lame, blew that $120 all to quick.

Below is a link to an ebay auction of the one I bought.

It's a skutt 818P. I disconnected the sitter. Put together the electronic c=
omponents for the digital controller per the wiring diagram. I plugged it i=
n and the solid state relay exploded like a bomb, luckily it was contained =
in an electrical switch box.

My sympathies on your exploding relay, Ben. The folks who write those=3D20
instructions aren't usually the ones who have to use them, so caveat empt=

or, eh?
Looks like you connected a high current line to some low current terminal=

s.
Been there, done that, had to get a new one. Learning experiences can be=3D=

dangerous!

I'd guess you can replace the solid state relay for around $50.=3D20
One like this might work, depending on the signal voltage from the PID co=

but be sure to test using something smaller (like an electric fan) first.=

Good luck,

The company that sold this package should stand by there product and=3D20
replace the relay at no charge, it is not your fault that they had the wr=

wiring diagram.
