I attended Posey Bacopoulous's workshop on Majolica the weekend before befo=

I have fired at trad temp 1100d Centigrade for majolica (bisque ware at ^04=

s Ostermann's The New Majolica, and Daphne Carnegy's Tin-glazed Earthenware=
=3D
, and of course you must read through her Maiolica, an update of previously=

=3D
I use a container of candle wax and paraffin (50/50)placed in a water bath=

This is what the phrase Multiple Firings covers.=3D20
Okay, moving on, THEN because I wanted to combine gloss firings at ^6 to ma=

=3D
C.; with some nice rosy breaks on edges if you're looking for this quality.=
=3D
This is an area of personal choice and potential further discussion. Also =
=3D
depends on your frits etc. If you use lead bisilicate (UK and European pott=

ers)=3DC2=3DA0make sure it's only on the outside, so no leaching occurs on =
food=3D
surfaces. I have to say this because I'm potting in USA now...I adore the =

have a study of some of the table top books and compare the European/UK lo=

Mix by volume. This is the base recipe for making colors to paint on over t=

he base glaze. For commercial stains the ratio should be 3 1/2 parts Stain =
=3D
Paste Base to one part colorant by volume. TEST first. If you want to fire =
=3D
majolica to ^04 there are excellent recipes cited in this article. =3DC2=3D=

t the PB base and colorants work equally well with the M^6G recipe and I co=
=3D
uldn't be more pleased with combining gloss loads! Used wax resist over are=
=3D
as which I masked out, and here's a big tip. Dry the glazed majolica pieces=
=3D
quite, quite thoroughly. And dry the waxed over areas quite, quite thoroug=
=3D
hly. I use a fan. Place waxed and/or glazed pieces in front of it to get bo=
=3D
ne dry; although I know I won't be touching them until next day. Up here in=
=3D
the top left hand side with the rain and humidity, it's a belt and braces =
=3D
no brainer. =3DC2=3DA0I also feel that dragging and smearing occur when one=
is =3D
too eager to get on with the fun of painting. You must let surfaces dry. BO=
=3D
NE DRY. CMC is probably fine in some glazes; personally, I don't use it. B=
=3D
ut, I do rely on bentonite in glazes which don't have enough clay in them. =

Cindy,
I mix some spray starch into my stains as a hardener. It seems to work for
me but I don't use majolica or cmc gum. I have heard that the cmc can cause
the glaze or stain to dry more slowly so you may just need to wait a little
longer before putting on the wax.
