Hi - I just had the worst wood firing ever - I had replaced the front
section of the train kiln with hard brick from soft so as to even out the
temperatures from front to back. What I got in the front section that was
mostly MD shino was a lot of bubbling. I think that it was underfired - as
cone 10 was barely down in the front section - however I don't really think
shinos bubble that much. Those pieces were loaded several days before and i=
t
rained a lot and probably fog as well. One small bowl that was glazed the
day of the firing was mostly OK except for some crawling on the flame side =
-
it was totally wet when the kiln started up.
Has anyone else experienced bubbles with MD shinos rewetting from either
rain or fog?
Last year I left out a bowl in the fog and the next day the raw glaze was
blistered. I fired it like that and the shino never smoothed out - that's
why I think that shinos do not bubble during melting (unless over another
glaze). I have refired a few pots to cone 7 electric but no movement -
bubbles the same size. Will try gas cone 10 next but do not think it will
help.
You can see the grisly details of the firing on my blog

Any ideas?
