Hello to those of you who fire at cone 6,
I have a question from someone who does not read ClayArt - does anyone
use stains with our cone 6 glazes?
If so would you be willing to share some of the results?

Ron...
I used to use mason stains extensively at cone 6. While I did not use them
in your base glazes per se, I cannot imagine the results would be much
different. I typically used between 3 and 12%, depending on color, the
more intense stains such as teal at the low end, and the pale stains such
as amethyst or light yellow at the higher end. The chartreuse soup bowls
and saucers in this set (

contained 8% stain.
I added the stains to a frit-based clear glaze. The saturated colors
worked well on their own, while the paler colors might benefit from a bit
of opacification, depending on the look you are after. For the series of
work I was using the stains on, I was going for a "dipped in plastic" look,
which I certainly got! The only other thing I would add is to avoid zinc
in the base glaze if you are using the green mason stains, as many of them
contain chrome.
As an aside, for a while I was playing with mason stains in low fired
glaze. I found that some of my severely imbalanced and unstable sculptural
bases would actually "take apart" the complex stains, yielding a rainbow of
color streaks from a single stain. The result was too fickle and difficult
to consistently reproduce however, so I abandoned the research.
Take care.

I use a yellow glaze that is MC6G Glossy Clear Liner with 1.5% tin and =3D
5% Praseodymium Yellow Mason Stain. I also tested Canary Yellow Mason =3D
Stain and I couldn't distinguish it from the Praseodymium. The glaze is =3D
a soft, buttery yellow and opaque. There is a photo here:
