=3D20
Hi All, =3D20
I=3DE2=3D80=3D99ve decided to do one more group firing this year. The dat=
es wil=3D
l be=3D20
November 30 (loading) and December 1 (firing).=3D20
All glazes and wadding must be provided by the participants since a key is=
=3D
=3D20
required to gain access to my studio in Kensington, MD.=3D20
The wadding formula is:=3D20
1/3 any fireclay (by volume)=3D20
1/3 sand (by volume)=3D20
1/3 sawdust (by volume=3DE2=3D80=3DA6.this is available at any lumber yard=
or at=3D
Home=3D20
Depot in the milling area)=3D20
I have been doing my wood firing events a bit differently this year. =3D=
20
I am cutting down on the size of each group in order to give more hands on=
=3D
=3D20
help and guidance (if needed) and also to cut down on dead time for=3D20
participants in larger groups.=3D20
The old cost was $225 for 1/8 of the Manibigama II. The new cost is $250=
=3D
=3D20
for a full =3DC2=3DBC of the kiln plus $35 (average) for the cost of high =
qual=3D
ity,=3D20
well seasoned, mixed cordwood (oak, cherry, and walnut). We generally us=
=3D
e=3D20
about =3DC2=3DBE of a cord and the average price of a cord is from $165 - =
$200=3D
.=3D20
Each firing will have 3 participants and I will take 1/4 of the kiln=3D20
myself so that I have a vested interest in the results. I will offer han=
=3D
ds on=3D20
instruction for firing a wood kiln for those of you who may be new to the=
=3D
=3D20
process. Everyone must take part in the loading, firing, unloading, and=
=3D
=3D20
cleaning up=3DE2=3D80=3DA6=3DE2=3D80=3DA6.or at least a good portion of it.=
=3D20
I am happy to share Phil Rogers=3DE2=3D80=3D99 and my glaze formulas with =
any=3D20
participant and can make some suggestions about which ones work out best =
=3D
in this=3D20
kiln. He gave me his full glaze notes when he was here doing a workshop l=

summer. =3D20
I have a firing coming up on September 14-15 and it filled within hours.. =
=3D
=3D20
The May, June, and July firings filled within days.=3D20
A deposit of $100 will hold your spot.=3D20

The next firing will be on July 21 and 22 with glazing on July 15 for=3D20
those of you enrolled in this group.=3D20
Each of you would need enough pots to cover a template 24" x 48" with a=3D=
20
height not to exceed 8 1/2" and you can include a couple of 12" pots for t=
=3D
he=3D20
top tier. Special provisions can be made for 18" pots, keeping in mind=3D=
20
that these will take up the space that two normal shelves would take up an=
=3D
d=3D20
will affect your total allotted space. Narrow forms give you the most ban=
=3D
g=3D20
for your buck.=3D20
Also, stacking and wadding one pot on top of another (only on unglazed=3D2=
0
surfaces) is a great space saver. I can show you how to do this even with=
=3D
=3D20
glazes by using wax resist as a decorative element. I just did a firing i=
=3D
n=3D20
which I fired 13 cup and saucer sets and 6 additional mugs and it took abo=
=3D
ut=3D20
one shelf (1/4 of your template). I always stack low bowls, plates,=3D20
serving trays, etc. and have learned to pack a lot of pots in a small spac=
=3D
e. I=3D20
can show you how to do the same.=3D20
There are templates at the kiln site that you can put your work on so that=
=3D
=3D20
we can move from person to person as we load and, that way, make sure that=
=3D
=3D20
there is good dispersion of work throughout the setting.=3D20
Please contact me ASAP if you are interested. Most cone 10 glazes will=3D=
20
work in wood firing. All materials, including clays and glaze materials a=
=3D
re =3D20
available at Clayworks Supply in Baltimore.=3D20
Phoenix, Loafers Glory, Standard 508, and Standard 410 are good options,=
=3D
=3D20
with Phoenix being a good bet since it is a medium colored body. If you=
=3D
=3D20
want a lighter color response, Loafers Glory is the best option since it=
=3D
=3D20
avoids some of the occasional cracking found in Standard #508.=3D20
Please contact me by email or call 301-646-3481 with questions.=3D20
Kind regards,=3D20
