blues and ashlar

whooo weee, gonna be a hot and yes, muggy day here in SE AZ..we've had so=

nice sprinkles almost daily for the past week, and the tranformation from=

desert to crazy jungle place has begun. I should not that 'jungl ' is a
relative term. after seeing the teeming jungle that is Western Wosconsin,=

know that now...you could hear things grow there. the only thing was, I k=

thinking...the plants are too close together, ya need more space between
these trees!
long day of glaze samples yesterday. it is odd how orders sometimes=3D20
coincide. all of a sudden i have two people on opposite ends of the coun=
=3D

wanting blues..one wants delicate earthy matte blues and greens, anoth=
=3D
er
wants vivid blues and deep indigo. i don't do a lot of blue, so yesterda=
=3D
y
was, 'expand my pallet/ glaze testing day'. it's a good excuse to see wha=
=3D
t=3D20
my bases will do with colorant mixtures I am familiar, but not intimate
with, in a clay sort of way.=3D20

another order is to do an ashlar pattern of flooring for a small room.
Ashlar patterns are composed of various sized tiles combined to make a
pleasing repeating , though not necessarily tightly or recognizably
repeating pattern. when i do some tile for the place here, i'll want t=
=3D
o
use an ashlar pattern .so this order gives me an opportunity to learn
more, experiment with color and scale and even remember what I have forg=
=3D
otten.
diving back into the research I'm finding the patterns already discovered=
=3D

playing with them as well.=3D20

once i did a very large floor with an ashlar pattern and the customer wan=
=3D
ted
it to be random... i discovered how impossible it is to achieve a random
look without introducing a discernable pattern. the eye wants to make a
pattern. the eye makes patterns out of clouds, out of the landscape, out =
=3D
of
everything. One of the delights of tilework has been discovering both th=
=3D
e
intention and the serendipity of making color and size compositions that
seem both casual and random, and yet hold together for a pleasing
composition...there's a bit of impressionism involved.=3D20
nature's dappling of light... there is no comparison=3D20
