i love the way we critique at hay creek.
we open kilns every day...put the stuff on a big
table and folks chat and pick out things they like.
never personal.
folks stack their own pots around, people paw through
the piles.
the point is: each finds things in the other work, something that may
become a part of their own work. just a touch, just a tiny thing.
no one gets heaps of praise, no one ever gets put down or joked about.
we all learn from others and enjoy the great pots of friends.
it all adds up.
i love informal discussion. give and take. likes and dislikes.
i did that as a teacher my entire life. tables full of pots. of course
you have to have lots of pots..not just one. i have always hated it
when folks come to me with one pot...`how do you like this?`
i never know. i want a body of work to talk about.
and, it is always the same story...if you are a perfectionist and love
perfect pots, it is hard for the casual, goofey, loooose potter to react.
what do you say? loosen up? i have heard that my entire life from
`experts`. it would be like hitting a fine watch with an ax.
