In one magazine article, Tatsuzo Shimaoka speaks about standing
behind Hamada while he threw on the Okinawan wheel. Shimaoka would
mime Hamada's actions at the wheel. He also said that Mrs. Hamada
told him, that Hamada would have conversations with Yanagi in his
sleep. Shimaoka said he did not have close friends like that and he
envied Hamada's friendships with Yanagi, Leach, Kawaii, etc.
When you read Leach's Hamada, Potter, understand, much of
it is simply transcriptions of his conversations with Hamada.
Hamada wrote too, but in Japanese. Here is an essay that
went with his 77 Chawan catalog, transcribe by my friend whose late
husband was Hamada's last apprentice:
