dale sure has it right....very little packing materials
availble free any longer.
but, it is rather cheap if you buy in bulk.

i buy a full wheel of bubble wrap, about 5 feet round. i use it for years.
just ran out. (pain in the ass to store...it is always in the way.)

i hate foam peanuts, they get all over the studio.

look around your area for wholesale packing.
u-line is fine, but it is retail. doubles the cost.

i just lost my box maker. it was a small operation
that made hundreds of sizes, but you have to buy
in lots of 500. but, they went belly-up. looking for
a new source.

the big box makers make you buy in the thousands, or
retail. i do store the flat boxes up in the garage attic

Bubble wrap is expensive and IS a pain to store. Warning!! DO NOT let your
bubble wrap supply be discovered by some unable to cope neurotic person or
small child who both love to pop the bubbles! Grrrr!

If you are near a community college/university, find out where the
bookstore is,
then find out where the dumpster/recycling container is for the bookstore.
College bookstores get thousands of books in very strong boxes for every
semester.
Visit the bookstore, bring a mug or other pottery you have made, ask for
the bookstore manager.
Give the manager the pot, tell them about yourself, that you need strong
boxes for your pottery.
Ask if you can have some of the boxes being thrown out, if they could call
when they are throwing out boxes.
This will happen a few weeks before each semester begins.

Another great place is retail stores selling lots of wine, boxes with
dividers.

I also buy bubble wrap by the 5 foot dia. roll. Last I bought cost $25.
And it is indeed a PITA to store. Always in the way. I also by 12 inch
wide rolls of expanded styrene. about 1/8th inche thick, it makes a
terrific pad between pieces. Odd pieces or large pieces of work go into
a plastic box of some sort, with a piece of the expanded styrene laid in
between. I don't wrap much with it. And if the piece is the diameter of
a 5 gallon plastic bucket, in it goes, with a piece or expanded styrene
in between and perhaps a piece of bubble wrap in there somewhere for
side protection. When full, the bucket gets a lid on it. The mix between
the plastic totes and the plasic buckets makes it easy to load my van -
a 1988 VW Vanagon. Works out just right. And all of it including the
padding for the pottery is reuseable over and over. It's all tough and
holds up well. Buckets are cheap and easily replaced as need. And they
are easy to carry if one needs to. If I have a distance to go, I pull
out my cart, stack two buckets on it -one on the other, strap them to it
with a mold banding strap - and away I go. With all the loading and
unloading that one does for a show - you really have to take care of
your back. I sure do.

Bubble wrap, expanded styrene, and plastic buckets - the way to go for me.
