Roger or Nils,

I am fairly new to clay and have not seen the original edition of the
Art of Firing. Does "NOT include the MFT kiln design." mean that the
new edition leaves out things that the older edition had? After having
heard so much about it on the list, I have been waiting for it to come
out before planning a gas-fired kiln.

The original editions of the The Art of Firing published by Clay Pacific
included plans for the Minnesota Flat Top car or trolley kiln designed for
four stacks of 12 x 24 shelves with a usable volume of about 40 cubic
feet.
In July A&C Black, London will publish with Gentle Breeze an entirely new
volume, totally rewritten and covering in greater detail processes
involving combustion, burners, kiln design, woodfiring, saltfiring,
refractory coatings, problem solving and so on. I believe it will fill in
alot of the gaps numerous readers have kindly pointed out in the earlier
version. It will not, however, include plans for kilns, MFT or otherwise.
I am presently considering developing a volume that will present plans for
the MFT, including an improved (flat) roof design and wider door. Other
kiln plans likely to be included are the IFB salt top-loader and a light
weight, portable raku kiln and burner system.
The decision to proceed on this book will depend on whether there is
sufficient interest.

A student is looking for a book that really deals thoroughly with the
problems of reduction firing. Does your new book deal with that? Not
technical problems but how to do it ones?

The answer are yes and yes. I have endeavored to cover various combustion
atmospheres with methods of observation, problem solving and measurement.
The book is designed for hands-on working with firing processes for
students and professionals. Should be available in July, 98. Nils

Folks,
Nils Lou's revised edition of "The Art Of Firing" is finished and should be
available around 10/15 though don't hold me to it! He did a wonderful job and
it will be of use to all who fire their pots with fossil fuel!
