Now another use for Mullite-- An alternative to Platinum in catalytic
converters.

"Cho, also a visiting professor at Seoul
National University in South Korea, and his team suspected that the
oxygen-based composition of mullite, originally found off the Isle of Mul=

l
in Scotland, might prove to be a suitable alternative. His team
synthesized mullite and used advanced computer modeling techniques to
analyze how different forms of the mineral interacted with oxygen and NOx.
After computer modeling confirmed the efficiency of mullite to consume
NOx, researchers used the oxide catalyst to replace platinum in diesel
engine experiments."

? Virginia Kyanite converts to Mullite in a very narrow range of 1250 c
to 1450 c, a temperature much lower than either Andalucite or
Sillimanite.
=3D20
Sillimanite was/is used to produce kiln shelves
that are mostly used in electric kilns. =3D20
=3D20
The original
Mullite was produced on THe Isle of Mull. Production of Mullite stopped
many years ago. What industry uses now is a Kyanite=3D20

product
that is mined in Virginia. =3D20
