using smart phone to do charge sales

updated tue 28 aug 12

I would appreciate some further information on using a smart phone to do ch=
arge
sale processing, as I am terminating my relationship with the processing ou=
tfit
that is robbing me continually as soon as I can get them on the horn.
Not holding
my breath.

Although I may not be able to get phone service at the annual event where I=
do
the vast majority of my charge sales, there is now WiFi service up there. =
So,
can I scan the credit card and use the WiFi to connect and do the
Square Up process?

Alternatively, would it be possible to use my Paypal account and the
WiFi hook up
to process the charge sales?

Or any other options I haven't asked about using the WiFi and a smart
phone without
a contract with a processing outfit.......

Thanks,

Eleanora

Yes, either Paypal's smartphone solution or Square will work over
Wifi. (or over the 3G/4G data plan). It'll probably be faster over
the wifi too.

Square has a couple of different plans - one is a flat rate $275 per
month, the other is 2.75% of the total - so if you do $10K a month (if
I've got the math right), the flat rate is better. Me, I *wish* I
made enough pottery to even HOPE for that volume (but I'm still
solidly in hobby mode).

Paypal's fees are a bit higher - 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction.

Both work with a gadget that you put in the earphone jack of the
phone. Paypals is a bit bigger (and, I think, more stable). I've got
the Square and love it.

Eleanora, yes that will work. Your smartphone is a multipurpose multimeth=

od
wondertoy. It will do what it needs to by whatever method is available. I=
=3D
f
you need to connect to the telephone network to make a voice call to anot=
=3D
her
telephone (landline or cell), your phone has only one way to do that -
connect to the nearest cell tower, if there is one. If not, no call.=3D20

The SquareUp transaction does not involve a phone call (despite occurring=
=3D

via a cellphone). It is an internet transaction. Your smartphone only nee=
=3D
ds
to be able to connect to the internet. If there is an open WiFi connectio=
=3D
n
(or a secured one for which you have the password) available, your phone
will use that. If there is no WiFi, your phone will use the celltower dat=
=3D
a
signal to access the internet. If there is neither, SquareUp won't work.

This is incorrect. I use the Square on my iPod. When I don't
have a Wi-Fi connection, use the knuckle buster to record the credit
card info, including 4 number code and zipcode. Next time I have
Wi-fi, I enter the data. Where it asks for a signature, you write
something like (non-card) for non-card transaction. Costs only a
little more.

I never use WiFi when I use Square. It just uses the cell phone signal.
I love the Square too, by the way.
