glaze nightmare update (secret recipes)

updated tue 10 feb 98

Aloha all: I wanted to update you all on my struggle to reincarnate my
glaze that went wrong on me lo these many months ago. Thanks for all your
help. I still don't have it back. None of the alternative formulations that
were generously provided have worked out. My current guess is that the
alkalinity of our water here affected the viscosity of the glaze causing a
thicker application and possibly some fluxing. I haven't been firing a lot
so my testing has slowed down. Hoping to fire soon. For all you pottery
mystics out there consider this...

I've always been one of those people that freely shares all my glaze
recipes, I believe in sharing and lending a helping hand when I can. I drew
the line at this glaze, however, because I derived so much of my income from
it. I got possessive and wouldn't give it out. Now I'm wondering if the
pottery gods didn't want to give me a kick in my stingy behind and so they
took it away from me. It's only speculation but you might think about it if
you're ever in a similar situation. You may think you make the pots but the
pots are really making you.

Try this: make up a batch of glaze using your old recipe and distilled
water. You can buy it in most supermarkets, I believe. If this works,
then the problem is your water. If not, it's probably in your ingredients:
maybe something changed.
