I have been using MInnesota Clays MB white stoneware for several years now
and am happy with it for the most part. However, I have had some delayed
cracking problems with it as in several months later, some of the plates
will split with normal use. I thought it was just me, but I am wondering if
the nature of this clay body just doesn't blend with my style of work. I
fire cone 6 electric and like a really white background for some of the
glazes that I use. I have tried the amaco white stoneware but it is very
floppy and colapses easily. Could some of you who use white stoneware give
me your opinions on some of the commercial clays out there? The plates from
the Aamaco clay never gave me any problems-but it just doesn't do large
pieces (say over 6 lbs) very well. I make functional tableware and rarely
make anything over 10 lbs. Thanks for any opinions. Other barb in bloomington

Hi Barb...sure would recommend H570 porcelainous stoneware/^10, very white
and throws like a dream. I comes from PLAINSMAN POTTERY SUPPLY here in
Canada.
There is NO cracking of handles, knobs etc, no warping, for me anyway, and
throws way better than Laguna B-Mix ^10. Stays where you put it and have
had none of my reduction fire glazes , now being fired in a CONEART
electric kiln, show any defalts. It can be throw thin, thin, thin, like
porcelain and is white, white, white. You will find that any clay you get
from Plainsman will be very clean.
You of course can use the cone 6 version of the 570 and it works the same.
Tony Hansen (on the list) is the man to get you to the right place to
order.
Call Plainsman, get some and give it a try. (Ususal disclaimers except for
being a happy customer for 30 yrs.)
