speedy skutt kiln

I am a novice potter with a Skutt 818 electric kiln. Every time I do a Cone
6 glaze firing of stoneware the kiln shuts off after 4 1/2 hours. The glaze
looks okay and the sitter cone seems to indicate correct firing. However,
the manual says 7-10 hours. Why is it taking half the time it should? (The
kiln is in the garage and currently it is 20 degrees out there.)

Recently I've started turning the setting from High to 6 as soon as the kiln
shuts off, then after an hour I turn it down again to 4 fir another hour,
just to lengthen the time. Should I?

if your glazes look OK after a short firing there's nothing wrong with
that.
If your determined to slow things down, instead of turning the Kiln onto
full try it a notch lower, say 6 or maybe 5, that'll slow it down. You
may find this better for your glazes because they will have had time to
flow a bit after melting.
Don't always believe what you read, personal experience is the best
schooling. Couple that with the consensus view and you have a base to
work from.

I have a Skutt 818 also. For glaze firings I usually load it in the
morning, have it on low from say 5am until 10am, then on medium until
2pm and then on high. It normally will finish around 6 or 7. I fire
to cone 5. Are you just counting the time from when you bump it up to
high?

I have a Skutt 714 Electric kiln which was new ( small kiln, frequent
firings )
when I purchased it a year & a half ago. IT NEVER GETS TO CONE ^6 in that
little amount of time.
This is my glaze firing schedule:
all plugs out
1 hour @ low ( both controls )
1 hour @ med
2 hours @ high
all plugs in
it takes at LEAST 4 more hours @ high with plugs in to 'trip off'
It simply sounds odd. I think you should call the Skutt people.

Hi,
It looks to me like you are turning your switches up after the kiln has
reached temperature.
Try 1-2hrs on 2-3 * then 1-2hrs on 4-5 * then up to high until the kiln
shuts off. Feel free to give me a call.

You may want to check if your kiln is a 208 volt kiln and the supply power
is 240 volt, that may be the problem. The kiln would have the tendency to
fire a little hotter.
