I also use a Skutt 818 and fire to cone 6. My experience is that you can
fire virtually as long as you wish if you turn up the kiln slowly enough.
I typically leave it on low for 4 hours, turn it up to #2 for 2 hours, turn
up to #4 for 2 hours, and then to high, after which it reaches temperature
in 45 min. to 1hr. 15 min., depending on how full the kiln is. I also
watch the witness cones carefully, and when cone 5 starts to bend, I turn
the kiln down to 4, and then to 3, so that by the time it reaches
temperature, it's had a soaking effect, which smooths out the glaze and
helps to eliminate pin-holing. I actually think my firing schedule could
be sped up, but it works for me.
