I have diabetes(type 1) and it can get out of control every now and then.
When I'm in the studio working I have to make sure my blood sugars aren't too
low so that i don't have to stop work and eat. I also find that if they are
too low I am more likely to make mistakes or trip or even drop my pieces.
That's a bummer when it happens!
Basically the precautions are the same as in any work environment....check
your blood sugar levels, have fruit or even glocose tablets on hand. No
matter how hard we try blood sugars drop....pottery as well as many other jobs
require physical activity...physical activity causes blood sugar levels to
drop and when insulin is being used it reacts more strongly than if you were
not physically active.
It will take some time to get adjusted to your diabetes...and it is an
irritating disease. I find that it just comes down to forming habits..after a
while you will become accustomed to doing all this and won't think anything of
it! But for now you have to get those habits down, no matter how inconvenient
they are.
I also agree with the other clayarter who responded to this question.
Excersise is VERY important. Don't look at your job(pottery) as a form of
excercise. Do a lot of Cardio activity and some weights. It will help you
work off the insulin.
If you want to talk more feel free to email, im, or call me...I'd be more than
willing to share my experience with you!
