The British Museum in London has an excellent collection of ancient lamps.
The lamps are quite lovely and varied in design. I am sure that the museum
could tell you about wicking and oils that were used. They have several
sites on the internet.

ancient lamps, there is an imformative article in the March/April 1998 issue
of 'Biblical Archaeology Review', page 40.
You can request this at your local library, via interlibrary loan if you do not
