hi, I've been trying to come up with a carbon trap glaze that looks good
on porcelain. Has anybody experimented with it and if so, would you mind
sharing your findings.

thanks,

My distant memory tells me that carbon trap glazes on porcelain meed a
bit more iron. Try using a darker clay than the one your recipes call for.

>Hello Mia, I've had very good success using Malcolm Davis's Carbon Trap
>Shino on porcelain, fired to cone 10 R, using propane (Bailey Studio
>Kiln). His recipe is:

nepheline synite 38.6

soda ash 16.3

E.P.K. 17.0

OM #4 13.0

soda spar 9.3

I think that the trick for good carbon is to go into heavy reduction at
cone 010, continue in light reduction to cone 8 tipping, heavy reduction
again for as long as you can keep it there without losing temp. Slow
firing works for me. I've had super results, and I'm also convinced that
coating my kiln with Itc has helped. Beautiful black crystals, surrounded
with orange and white. Best of luck, meticulously loose Liz

Hi. I have done a search on carbon trap glazes but has anyone used silicon
carbide with these glazes. The pots I saw were salt fired in a wood
burning kiln.

Hi Sam
Look my site at www.ceramicsdelight.com
My opinion is that good trap depends on amount of sodium on pot surface
I never use silicon carbide and firing are made in the gas kiln

Thanks mate, have also been told to sprinkle a bit of ash on the glaze
while still wet, we tried this on the week-end and had successful results
in a gas kiln. Will be firing in a wood/salt kiln in 6 weeks at college.

Sam.
